Hsiu-Chi Cheng is Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University. He currently serves as a visiting staff (2002-present) and Dean at College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University (2025-present).
Dr. Cheng obtained his MD from China Medical College (Taichung, Taiwan) in 1996 and has been practicing gastroenterology at National Cheng Kung University Hospital since 2002. In 2009, he earned his PhD from National Cheng Kung University. He became a faculty member of National Cheng Kung University in 2010 and a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University in 2019.
Dr. Cheng’s research interests focus on peptic ulcer diseases, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-related gastropathy, and the evolution of gastric premalignant conditions. Recently, he has approached studies on the regulation of host integrin α5β1 receptor by different genotypes of H. pylori, the evolution of gastric premalignant conditions after H. pylori eradication, the composition of gastric microbiota in gastric carcinogenesis, and the development of the mask focal modulation network, which integrates multi-level focal attention features for gastric intestinal metaplasia segmentation and the cross-scale fusion transformer to evaluate histopathological images. As the Principal Investigator (PI) of a NSTC grant (2019-2022), he investigated the regulation of host integrin α5β1 receptor by H. pylori ImaA genotypes and the role of ImaA single nucleotide polymorphisms in premalignant conditions. Additionally, as the chief PI of an integrated research project, he and his co-PIs study the potential of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii as a probiotic in Clostridioides difficile colitis under the support from NSTC (2020-2024). The research results primarily pertain to clinical diseases such as H. pylori infection, gastric premalignant conditions, and Clostridioides difficile colitis. He is also a co-PI of an integrated research project from NSTC (2021-2023) concerning the development of an artificial intelligence platform to evaluate the gastric pathology.
Dr. Cheng is a co-author of “The Taiwan Guideline for Screening and Eradication of Helicobacter pylori Infection for Gastric Cancer Prevention,” published in 2022 by the Gastroenterological Society of Taiwan and Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan. He was also a panelist of the “Real-World Gastritis Initiative” project, supported by the Fondazione Internazionale Menarini (published in Gut 2024). He also participated in global consensus conferences on screening and eradication of Helicobacter pylori for gastric cancer prevention- the Taipei global consensus (published in Gut 2020) and the Taipei global consensus II (in press in Gut 2025). |
