【International Activity】East Meets West: NCKU College of Medicine Successfully Concludes 2026 International Summer School, Advancing Global Exchange in Precision Geriatric Care
|
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Medicine successfully hosted its two-week International Summer School from July 6 to July 17, 2026. Addressing global population aging trends, this year's theme, "East Meets West: Holistic Strategies in Precision Geriatric Care— The Taiwan Experience," attracted outstanding students from the United States, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Through a comprehensive curriculum blending academic lectures, cultural experiences, and field visits, the program effectively fostered international exchange and learning in the field of geriatric care. The curriculum covered key topics including Taiwan’s long-term care policies, dementia care and prevention, and the application of big data and technology in delaying disability, guiding students to grasp current trends and technical developments. Additionally, introduction and hands-on sessions in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices—such as acupuncture and cupping—allowed participants to explore the integrated application of Western and Chinese medicine in geriatric care. Cultural activities, including Tai Chi and calligraphy curriculums, provided students with deeper insights into Eastern wellness philosophies. |

Field visits formed an essential part of the program, bringing participants to National Tainan Junior College of Nursing, the Chinese Medicine Department at Tainan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare, several local TCM clinics, and long-term care facilities. The group also visited the Zuojheng community to examine local revitalization and rural geriatric care initiatives firsthand. During a visit to the NCKU Hospital Douliu Branch, students conducted an in-depth study of a community neighborhood long-term care station. Offering short-term care, congregate meals, meal deliveries, and disability-delaying activities, these stations serve as vital components of Taiwan's community care network. Participants engaged directly with elderly residents through fitness and strength training, chair yoga, and Rummikub board games, experiencing the seamless connection and operation of Taiwan's long-term care services across community, institutional, and medical systems. Through these diverse activities, students not only gained a deeper appreciation of combining theory with practice, but also experienced the localized, internationalized, and multifaceted characteristics of Taiwan’s healthcare system. |

Participants highly praised the program's dual focus on theoretical exploration and practical application. Some students even expressed a strong desire to pursue postgraduate studies at NCKU or work in Taiwan in the future. By facilitating international learning and showcasing Taiwan’s practical achievements in precision geriatric care and medical integration, NCKU College of Medicine remains committed to promoting global cooperation and talent cultivation, while continuously broadening international horizons and fostering interactions for its faculty and students. |
